The lapsing of Finland’s universal basic income trial

Universal basic income sounds crazy to some. Fears of inflation shocks rippling through Finland appear to have not come to pass, yet. Other measures like workforce participation have yet to be reported from the trial, which is set to end in December 2018.

All eyes will be on Finland as they continue to test the waters of seemingly counterintuitive policies beyond the UBI trial.

Finland has tested policies before, such as a “full employment” trial which sought to provide a salaried job for every unemployed person in the small town of Paltamo. And the country is still keen on novelty. After the UBI trial, the government is planning to test a universal credit system.
